Calvin Klein Advertisement

Calvin Klein's ad clearly depicts sexual violence with multiple men surrounding one woman with one man even pulling the woman's hair. The advertisement received major backlash in Australia along with complaints and concerns here in the United States. The ad was claimed to show casual gang rape and and glamorize violence against women.

Carl's Jr. Padma Lakshmi Advertisement

In Carl's Jr.'s racy ad for their latest burger, Padma Lakshmi is shown seductively eating her burger with ketchup dripping down her hand. This depiction of dripping ketchup and the woman licking her hand have largely sexual and slightly violent undertones. This commercial is one of many in Carl's Jr.'s sexually provocative line of advertisements.

Carl's Jr. Paris Hilton Advertisement

Carl's Jr. has exploited the sexuality of female celebrities to sell their products in countless commercial advertisements.  In such ads, the women are portrayed in an extremely sexually suggestive manner while ketchup, which resembles blood, drips down their bodies. An example can be viewed from our next blog post. Before the ketchup commercials began, the first in this line of controversial commercials featured Paris Hilton washing a car (or rather, washing herself) in a skimpy swimsuit. This sparked a reaction from the Parents Television Council which took action against this issue on the basis that its airing violated the FCC's laws concerning "appropriate time to air indecent material." Their official complaint can be found here, along with another news article surrounding the controversy:

Belvedere Vodka Ad Campaign

This advertisement was pulled from Belvedere's social media sites including Twitter and Facebook after an outrage from anti-sexual violence groups. The marketing campaign's unmistakeable depiction of rape culture and suggested humor infuriated American audiences. The backlash led Belvedere's president, Charles Gibbs, to donate money to the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network, which was received by angered viewers as an affirmation of guilt, furthering the idea that the ad had sexually violent undertones.

Hornet Signs Texas Decal

A truck decal created by Hornet Signs, a decal company in Texas, received countless complaints for its blatant depiction of rape culture with a woman tied in the back of the truck, seemingly unconscious with her face masked by her hair. The tailgate image was so realistic that the police received multiple 911 calls after nearby drivers believed there was actually woman in distress. Locals were not the only ones disturbed by the image, which has been criticized on a national level by organizations as widely recognized as UniteWomen.org. Like Belvedere Vodka, this company has also made donations to a related charity, in this case the Advocacy Center for Crime Victims and Children; however, critics do not appear impressed.

How does your reaction to this image compare to the original, as there is a male in this position instead of the woman?
Do you think rape culture advertisements like this (obvious) are more damaging to society's perception of women, or do you think subtle ads have a greater impact by influencing the subconscious?
